Thoughts for April

First of all—thanks to our Web Mistress, Cheri Sleeth for not only the beautiful Web Site, but also for what she has done with our “New” Newsletter. It’s really cool!! What a blessing and a gift she is to us!

Perhaps you recently heard that the popular drug Singulair has been associated with severe (possibly suicidal) depression. In an interview on Fox News I heard a remark made that “in the original research there were only a handful of people who got that depressed. That’s no reason for people stopping taking the medication.” What a dumb thing to say!!  Just because only “a few” people suffer such severe depression there are many more who are depressed, even if not so severely!

The reason I am bringing this up is that once again the medical and pharmaceutical professions have chosen to treat symptoms instead of causes of medical afflictions, and there are consequences to their actions! The causes of allergy and asthmatic symptoms are very complex and so will not react to simple drug solutions. Before any person suffering from asthma or allergies takes a prescription medication, they should try more basic solutions.

For example, I would try the following before even considering the use of prescription drugs:

1.     Get rid of your soaps that “kill 99% of bacteria.” Do not ever use this kind of soap on your children! The body is not meant to be sterile or in a sterile environment. Just plain non-toxic Dove or Ivory soap will do the trick!  Bacteria in our environment are good for our immune system, and they also help to regulate our immune systems so that allergy is less likely to afflict us.

2.     Add a probiotic to your daily supplement regimen.  These “good bacteria” help regulate and strengthen your healthy immune system.

3.     When allergies or asthma afflict us, eliminate food allergies before starting on prescription medications. Eliminate “the big six:” corn, wheat, soy, dairy, citrus, and eggs. Eliminate these six foods for 5 days and then add them back one at a time, but only add one of the foods back every 3 days. This will let you know if your problems are from a food allergy. The biggest culprit for allergies and asthma is dairy, but it can be any of the others.

4.     Take at least a high quality multi-vitamin/mineral every day, preferably along with other anti-oxidants and a probiotic to help your immune system function at its peak and in balance.

So, Singulair is not the best solution to the problem. This situation reminds me of the problem with cholesterol-lowering drugs. The number one selling drug in the world is Lipitor. This drug is used to lower cholesterol numbers. And this is truly an example of using a drug to treat a laboratory test—not to treat a patient.

Whether elevated cholesterol is a problem or not is open to debate. I happen to believe that elevated cholesterol is indicative of a problem. And that problem is inflammation. The body makes its own cholesterol totally apart from the influence of diet or genetics in response to inflammation in the body. So we want to control the inflammation.

There is serious debate among scientists as to whether elevated cholesterol numbers are indicative of a problem that should be addressed by directly attacking the cholesterol. There has even been serious and well done research that shows that statin drugs like Lipitor, Zocor, and Crestor may not help heart health or prevent heart disease at all!! In fact, they may make the situation worse by causing side effects which then need more drugs to correct the side effects, leading to more side effects, more toxicity, and on and on like being on an ever faster treadmill until one falls off!

If we lower the blood sugar and insulin, lower the weight and body fat, and make healthy lifestyle changes and choices with Nutritional changes at the heart of treatment, we will be much better off and also healthier and happier!

Keep in mind that cholesterol, in addition to fighting inflammation, also is the true “mother hormone” in the body. From cholesterol come estrogen, estriol, estradiol, and testosterone. We all know about the problems with women and hormones, especially around the menopausal period of their life, but what about men? If you watch any sports at all on television, you will hear the song “Viva Viagra” played over and over. Never before in the history of Man has there been such a problem with ED. Do you think that the largest selling drug in the world might have something to do with it? Do you seriously wonder why this connection is not even being studied?

Thanks for reading, and watch for more next month. What would all of you like to hear about? I really want to know, and I really care!

Recipe for April

Tom’s Guacamole

MCj03362560000[1]

·         2 large ripe avocados, peeled and mashed

·         1 ½ teaspoons fresh-squeezed lemon juice

·         1 garlic clove, diced

·         1 teaspoon chili powder

·         1 spring onion, diced (white and green of plant)

·         2 tablespoons picante sauce

·         Combine ingredients and mix well

·         Serve not with potato chips or Doritos, but with raw veggies such as celery sticks and carrots, and gluten-free chips.  Or use it in place of mayonnaise.

Not only yummy, but also very healthy!  Not only is this recipe preservative and toxin free, it also will provide your body with folate, vitamins K, C, and B6, fiber, and a natural cholesterol-lowering plant sterol.

Supplement of the Month

Coenzyme Q10

Naturally produced by the human body, CoQ10 is necessary for converting food into energy. That’s why this essential nutrient accumulates in high energy organs like the lungs, liver, and especially the heart. People with heart disease have lower levels of CoQ10 in their heart muscle cells, and statin drugs (allegedly for heart health) block the production of CoQ10.

MCj02810390000[1]

CoQ10 may bring relief from high blood pressure, but it may take from 4-12 weeks. Some human clinical trials have shown that CoQ10 reduces symptoms associated with heart failure, including shortness of breath, difficulty sleeping, and swelling of the extremities. If you have a heart attack, hit the CoQ10 immediately, and keep taking it. You will be less likely to have another heart attack, and you will be less likely to die of heart disease.

Most studies show that a dosage of 50-150 mg per day is necessary for heart health, and CoQ10 should be taken with a meal containing fat for best absorption.

A Personal Note

MCj04338680000[1]Over the past twenty years, I have become one of the strongest proponents of the cause and effect relationship between infectious pathogens and autoimmune disease as well as other systemic medical problems.  This strong belief has been based on my review of hundreds of published articles in the scientific literature and my own clinical observations.  However, its roots can be traced to the terrible suffering of my mother from arthritis during my early and formative years and continuing until her death in January of 2002.  She was actually crippled by a makeshift dentist (dental technician) when she was first affected by arthritis at the age of 17.  She was told that she had “gum disease” and she would be better off getting all her teeth out instead of getting treatment.  When the teeth were extracted, the infection most likely remained in the bone, and the arthritis continued to worsen.

During the following years, my mother’s arthritis got so bad that she had both hips replaced, both knees replaced, and both hands operated on to replace and clean out the knuckles.  She never had a moment without pain.  In all this time no “doctor” mentioned infection as a cause.  No “doctor” suggested that she be evaluated nutritionally.  They only did the mechanical work of surgery.

Later, when I became familiar with the work of Dr. Paul Ewald of Amherst University, Dr. Walter Loesche of the University of Michigan, and Dr. Paul Keyes of the National Institute of Dental Research, among many others, I started to question the doctors treating my mother and ask if she might have an infection in her body.  All of them denied that infection had anything to do with autoimmune disease.

I became acutely aware of this during my own 38 years as a Dentist. In fact, this is what drove me to write the Protocols for Biocompatible (non-surgical) Treatment of Periodontal (gum) Infection for the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. I also founded and served as Publisher of the Newsletter of Non-Surgical Periodontics. The principles I espoused then have since become common knowledge in much of the “Holistic or Non-Toxic” Dental Community.

Dr. Aristo Vojdani of Immunosciences Laboratory has published research showing the connection between autoimmune disease and infection and specifically showed that his own mother, who suffered terribly from the same type of arthritis as my mother, had antibody titers to bacteria in the mouth so high that there was no question that her arthritis was directly related to oral infection.

I am absolutely convinced by this outstanding science that my mother’s arthritis could have been greatly relieved by treating the infection and by strengthening her body and immune system with good Nutrition. There is no longer any doubt, and there is no excuse for present day medicine and dentistry not realizing the connection.  Enough people have suffered!!
