of all, welcome Spring!! I am always happy to feel the coming of Spring and
of Autumn. Spring seems to give us a sense of "newness." It is a
season of possibilities and growth. This season gives you a chance to start
over in your quest for Optimal Health! This Newsletter will give you an
idea of how to start with one area on the Path to a new you!
Secondly,
I have a confession to make: when I first started working in the field of
Nutrition I swore that I would never be a "Fat Doctor." I have
dealt with CAUSES as
opposed to SYMPTOMS ever
since I entered health care in 1970. And I really believed that, unless
there was a glandular problem, obesity and overweight were symptoms
of the problem, and the cause was gluttony and laziness.
How
wrong I was!!! In fact, so many of the diseases we see every day in our
modern society are directly caused by diet and obesity. So helping a person
to lose weight is not only good for their psyche, it is also treating the
cause of their health problems
!
Not only does fat cause the organs of
the body to work at far less than ideal, it is also a storehouse for toxins,
and it steals nutrients from the functioning parts of the body.
Furthermore, when you are carrying around even 30 pounds of excess weight, that means that you are carrying around three
bowling balls 24/7/365!! No wonder the joints are all sore. No wonder
so many suffer from "arthritis."
But
the question always arises, how do you deal with
the CAUSE of overweight
and obesity. Research has clearly shown that when we look at all of the
weight loss programs available to the public, virtually all of them are
failures. The failure rate ranges from 85% to 98%! The best that I have
seen from the research is Weight Watchers, and that is not the most
practical diet. So there had to be a better way.
When
we want to lose weight we need to know the enemy--fat. There are three
types of fat in the human body:
1. Structural Fat: This fills the gaps between the organs,
supporting tissues and blood vessels and nerves. It cushions these vital
structures, even to the tune of padding the bones of the feet for walking!
When you think of this type of fat, think of the lining of all arteries,
veins and nerves, but also of the oil that lubricates the joints of the
body. Even the brain is largely made up of fat so that it can absorb shocks
to the head and body.
2. Normal Fat: This is a body store of fat that is kept as
a reserve fuel that the body can depend on when the nutritional intake is
not sufficient to meet the demands of the moment.
3. Abnormal Fat: This is a potential reserve of fuel but is
not readily available for the body to use. I liken it to a long-term CD in
a bank. It is very hard to get access to it, and there can normally be a
penalty in trying to withdraw it. It is this fat that causes obesity!! It has become a problem in today's
world due to the very poor diet people are eating, due to the amount of
toxins in our body (the body uses fat to store toxins), and many other
factors which are caused by our
lifestyle. This is also the main fat targeted by the diet we use in
our Program for weight loss.
Most
diet and diet/exercise programs target fat---but that's the problem--they
target all 3 fats. And that's the reason they all eventually fail.
I
first learned of a better way several years ago from three people: a
patient who lost over 30 pounds, our doctor who also lost at least that
much, and a fellow Biological Dentist from Canada who lost even more. So,
we decided to try this "better way."
The
method these 3 people used was called the HCG diet developed by Italian
researcher Dr. A.T.W. Simeon. HCG stands for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin.
When a woman becomes pregnant, her body produces a very high amount of HCG
in order to burn the fat to release nutrients for the fetus. She may have
20,000 mg of HCG in her body at any one time! We all (men and women) have
HCG in our bodies at all times, but it does go way up in pregnancy. Let me
perfectly clear, HCG is not a pregnancy hormone! It is a normal and
natural hormone which happens to increase in pregnancy. (The first and most
important function of any body is propagation of the species---this is left
over in our genes from our cave man days.)
In
so many diets, you follow the diet to the letter and nothing happens. Or
you lose weight, but you are always hungry. Or you lose weight and you look
sick. None of these is a sign of a good diet. Nor does a good diet allow
the weight to just come right back on as soon as you stop.
With
the HCG diet, you are limited to 500 calories a day. Yes, anyone who eats
only 500 calories a day will lose weight! But, with the HCG you burn so
much fat that nutritionally it is comparable to eating from 2,000 to
4,500 calories a day. So the body is not being starved which is what
happens if you try eating only 500 calories a day without the HCG.
Furthermore,
the HCG helps the hypothalamus (a gland in the brain that regulates the
metabolism in the body) to reset to a lower weight as a "normal"
weight. By working with the hypothalamus, HCG alleviates your hunger to a
large extent. Most people lose an average of one pound per day on the HCG
diet.
Further,
the HCG diet does not induce sagging and loose skin often characteristic in
other diets. Most of our Clients report sleeping better while on the diet
and also feeling strong and having increased energy.
A
number of months ago, one of my Clients called me as she was thinking of
starting the diet. She wanted to do so, but her husband was against it. He
believed that if something sounded too good to be true, it WAS too good to
be true. I could not agree more! But this diet is not too good to be true.
In fact, I consider it to be extremely difficult. We are surrounded
by constant temptations to eat poorly. Many of the worst foods for us are
billed as "healthy foods" by their marketing. They are actually
making us fatter and sicker. We all know this, but there they are in our
pantry.
The
diet I use is incredibly strict. There
is absolutely no cheating of any kind allowed. If you cheat, you fail!!
That's it--I will not sugar coat it. You eat the foods on the diet, and
only the foods on the diet. It is very healthy--but it is difficult. There
is no easy way! (But the reward is a constant loss of weight almost daily.)
There is no alcohol, no sugar, no
extra fat allowed---AT ALL!! You will take only a very few
supplements that we provide with the Program--no others. But, if you follow
the diet and do only modest exercise you
will lose weight! And honestly, most people are not starving while
on the diet, are very well nourished by their own fat, and the food is not
only healthy, but tastes good (we provide a great cookbook with the
Program).
There
are three ways of following the HCG diet: shots once a day, a powder/liquid
mixture two times a day, or homeopathic drops
three time a day. I have chosen to use the homeopathic because it is so
easy and so extremely safe. I have been reading and hearing reports on the
news about how the HCG diet may not be safe. Using the homeopathic is
extremely safe, and I will work with the people using my program to insure
they are safe and healthy. Plus, the shelf life of the homeopathic is
indefinite when unopened and stored in a room temperature spot, over
one-year when opened and refrigerated, and over 4 months when opened and
kept at room temperature.
I
also have heard the ad on the radio about using HCG by ordering it by phone
or e-mail. Homeopathics, which are incredibly
safe, are powerful medicines and should, in my opinion be prescribed only
by a trained practitioner who knows his patient. Only when a thorough
health history is taken and there is a deep discussion between patient and
doctor is safety assured. No one will ever be treated by me without my
having full knowledge of their health situation. Also, I have researched
the product I use, and I am absolutely convinced that it is the highest
quality that is available. Do the people who advertise in the paper, on the
radio and television and on the Internet research their product? And if one
orders from these sources, whom do they call if there is a problem? My
Clients all know they can call me, and they will get help.
Speaking
of that--some people do not do as well as others on this diet. People
battling gout or gall bladder problems may be at some risk. People who have
had a hormone driven cancer (breast, ovarian, uterine, prostate, or
testicular) within the last 5 years may be at risk. Those people taking
prescription drugs of any kind may find that they do not lose weight
readily. These people all need a medical okay from their physician to join
my Program. Losing weight will change the laboratory numbers on your blood
testing---for the better,
but
still it is a change, and often prescription drugs must be lowered or
stopped all together. This should only be done by the treating physician.
(Keep in mind that getting off prescription drugs is a good thing.)
One
more thing: fat is a storage depot for toxins. When you lose fat two things
happen: you release the toxins, and you lose a place to store the toxins.
So lifestyle changes are always necessary, and detoxification may be
necessary. This may not be a big
problem if you are not sick to begin with. However, if you are on any kind
of prescription drug, you are sick. But, getting you well is your
business. Your physicians can help guide you, but they will not by
themselves heal you. Getting well is your responsibility. Most of you
who know me, know that detoxification is a specialty of mine. If it is or
becomes a problem, I can help you get through it. When you talk to your
physicians, tell them that, and give them this Newsletter to read.
My
own personal story is that, in May of 2010 I weighed 188.0 pounds, my body
fat was 29.7%, and my all-important visceral fat (which may indicate a
potential for heart disease) was 16%. Today I weigh a very comfortable 164
pounds, my body fat is 21.4%, and my visceral fat is 11%. While I was on
the diet I felt more hungry than almost all of my
Clients, and yet I was able to push on and get to where I want to be. You
can do it too!
