Summer Topics

I opened the last Newsletter saying that "it seems that summer is finally here, and I welcome it." As I sit down to write this Newsletter, the radio is reporting a temperature of 102 in Baltimore City. It is 100 here in the Beach Country of Delaware. Maybe I spoke too soon!!

This month I am covering the topic of sweating, which is extremely important because the skin is the body's largest organ of detoxification and sweating is one of the most important ways the body detoxifies. It also is important for other reasons which we will discuss below. I also think this is a great topic on such a hot day!

Sweating (also called perspiration or diaphoresis) is the production of fluid consisting of water and various dissolved solids. Sweating is important for regulating body temperature (for example on hot days or while exercising), and also the skin is the largest of the 5 "organs of detoxification" of the body and it uses sweating to rid itself of poisonous toxins.

Evaporation of sweat from the skin surface has a cooling effect on the body. Sweating is therefore increased by heat and exercise. It can also be due to nervousness and nausea due to the action of our "stress glands," the adrenal glands. Sweating is controlled by the part of the brain called the hypothalamus.

There can be many causes of sweating, but the main cause I wish to discuss is toxicity. We know when it's hot, when we are exercising, or when we are anxious or nervous that we will sweat and we understand that and are not bothered by it. But, what about when someone sweats for apparently no reason? I contend that the reason quite often is that the person is very toxic. The other 4 organs of detoxification besides the skin (liver, gut, kidneys, and lungs) are not able to keep up with the toxicity that is poisoning the body. Toxicity will cause "abnormal" sweating and may make the person sweat with small amounts of alcohol, caffeine, tobacco, some medications, and spicy foods.

This toxicity will cause the thyroid and adrenal glands to not function at their best and may actually damage these two glands. Therefore, excessive sweating may be a symptom of an underlying disease, especially of the thyroid and adrenal glands. But extreme sweating is most surely a sign of toxicity.

I have one thing to really stress to you: never, ever use antiperspirants. Almost all antiperspirants are toxic (filled with aluminum, parabens, and other toxins) in addition to causing many allergic reactions, and they are also taken through your skin into the body. Also, the process of sweating is so important to the body that it must not be interfered with. If you need to use antiperspirants to keep your clothes from staining with sweat under "normal" circumstances, you need professional guidance to find out what is wrong. Non-toxic deodorants are fine to use to keep from smelling. One I can recommend is a mineral deodorant called Crystal Body Deodorant. The mineral scrub deodorants are helpful because the minerals keep in check the bacteria which cause bad body odor. This deodorant is hypoallergenic, and aluminum and paraben free. You can purchase it at drug stores such as Rite Aid and Walgreens.

So, what to do if you sweat "abnormally?" First of all, I advise that you seek help from an Integrative Health Practitioner (www.acam.org) including a trained and experienced Nutritionist (www.wholebodyhealth.us). This person probably will suggest a safe and effective means of detoxification such as using a Far-Infrared Sauna as a means of detoxification. This is a great way to detoxify when used along with a professionally administered detoxification program using a special diet and supplements, and then it is a great way to maintain your non-toxic status in a very toxic world. You might check to see if your Integrative Health Practitioner has a FIRS that you can use.

At all times I stress the importance of drinking lots of water which is called hydration. Most people are dehydrated to a greater or lesser extent, and all they have to do is to drink more water. (Dehydration is the loss of water and salts from the body.) This is especially true of those who sweat more than the average. Sweating can be very good for you, and as I have said, it can be an indication of metabolic problems or disease in your body. Water is needed to make the metabolism work well, to help in utilization of nutrients, and to remove toxins from the body. You should consume water at the rate of about 1 ounce of water for every pound of body weight per day and even more if it is very hot or you are exercising at a moderate rate or higher.

Another trick to helping the skin function well is by using body scrubs such as the mineral scrubs. Put them in your bathwater or scrub your body with them using a brush or loofa in the shower. You can even use the loofa or a brush to scrub your skin when it is dry. What this does is remove the old dead skin cells and open the skin pores so that they function at their best. This can be followed by using an oil such as 100% pure almond oil to lubricate your skin.

This point of using pure almond oil or pure olive oil to lubricate skin is important. Do no put anything on your skin that you would not consume through your mouth. The skin breathes in and out, so what you put on your skin enters your body as sure as it does when consumed through the mouth. You would not even think of eating what is in the average skin cream or lotion. If you doubt that, read the labels on the lotions and creams made for the skin.

So, don't take heavy abnormal sweating lying down. It is possible to eliminate this problem while attaining optimal health.

All of Dr. Baldwin’s recommendations are based on solid scientific research.  However, no one Nutritional Plan will work for ever person, nor will any one Nutritional Plan work for every disease or degenerative condition.  Pathways is not a substitute for proper medical diagnosis of conditions which may require medical or surgical intervention.  Our Diagnostic System allows us to treat the person with the condition and not the condition that has the person.  Our program is not simply a weight loss program.  It is a program intended to help the client learn how he or she can attain optimal health and wellness with a healthy immune system.  We maintain that everyone should be able to live life to the fullest and enjoy each day of life.
