Hello,
again! I have taken a rather long sabbatical from writing my Newsletter for
a variety of reasons, but I am now back to writing
it. I think it is appropriate at this time since February is Heart Month
and March is Nutrition Month!
To
get right into it, I am planning on dedicating the Newsletter to helping
all of us to see how we can be healthy, happy, and productive without
depending on drugs to make it happen. The past fifty years have shown us
that, if nothing else, drugs are a combination of Blessing and Curse,
and the Curse side is rapidly pulling away from the Blessing
side of drugs.
When
pharmaceutical antibiotics (as opposed to natural occurring antibiotics)
first came on the scene, they were definitely a Blessing. The life span of
humans increased dramatically. The death rates for young children and
babies dropped. No one can seriously say that antibiotics have not been a Blessing
to humans. But, the way that antibiotics have been a Blessing is that they
are used by doctors to get to the CAUSE
of the distress--an infection. Yes, I know and agree that the underlying
"cause" is a compromised immune system which allows a bacteria or
a virus (pathogens) to take hold. And the best way to avoid antibiotics is
to take very good care that one's immune system is healthy.
But
even in the case of antibiotics, there is a very dark down side. The root
of the word antibiotic actually means what it says--"kill life."
So, antibiotics kill the good bacteria along with the bad bacteria. And the
good bacteria do many wonderful and functional things, one of which is to
produce anywhere from 70% to 85% of our body's immune system! So, while
antibiotics do in fact treat the "cause" of the disease, they
also set the body up for possibly even worse diseases coming on board.
And
today most of the drugs being prescribed by doctors are not even remotely
attacking the CAUSE of
the "diseases" they are "treating." They only remove
the SYMPTOMS of the
disease. For example, statin drugs (like Lipitor, Zocor, Crestor, etc.) are
used to lower cholesterol which has been shown to be at the very most a SYMPTOM of a disease not a
cause. And the long-term side effects of the statins may lead to other even
worse diseases that can kill the patient. Research has shown definitively
that the statin drugs have many damaging side effects such as:
Cognitive
problems like brain fog and loss of memory
Personality
changes and mood disorders
Degenerative
muscle problems and nerve damage in the hands and feet
Sexual
dysfunction (like erectile dysfunction and loss of libido)
Immune
system suppression
Pancreas
and liver dysfunction, including increases in liver enzymes
Cataracts
And
according to many researchers, including physician and former astronaut
Duane Graveline, MD, PhD, "The sad truth is that
cholesterol, our supposed enemy for over 35 years, has nothing to do with
cardiovascular disease. It is the most important biochemical in the
body." (Emphasis is mine!)
The
question to ask is "WHY"
is the cholesterol so high. What is a high reading
anyway? (Different "experts" have different numbers to indicate
what is "high" and what is not.) Everyone I know agrees that
cholesterol goes up in response to inflammation in the body. What is
causing this inflammation and what is the HEALTHIEST way to attack the
cause?
To
stop the symptoms while not addressing the cause of the illness is no
different than if we noticed that a house is on fire, so instead of putting
the fire out we just close the door! Or, if a person is eating high fat,
high sugar foods and is having stomach distress, that person is advised to
take pills to cover up the stomach distress. Instead, how about stopping
the terrible diet?
We
have allowed ourselves to be lulled into a false sense of security in the
words we use to describe medical treatment of all types. For example, we
describe certain treatments as being prevention. I can best
describe this in my own profession of dentistry. Dentists find a small
cavity and they cut out the decay and fill the tooth. They say, "we
did not allow the cavity to get bigger so what we are doing is
preventive." No--it's not--it's treatment!
Prevention is teaching the person how not to get (PREVENT) the decay in the
first place. Teach the person how to remove soft plaque from the teeth
every day, and teach them why not to eat sugar. That's PREVENTION!
How
do you know how to prevent diseases? The only one who can prevent diseases
is YOU. A doctor cannot
prevent disease. Only YOU
can do that! (That is why I have always said that we do not have a health
care system. We have a sick care system. If the person wants to take care
of themselves, they can learn to do it. If the doctor or ancillary medical
personnel teach them how to do that--then we have a health care system!) You do this with lifestyle
changes. These include proper diet, specific lifestyle changes, proper
exercise, and the use of high quality and effective supplementation to the
diet.
Over
the coming months I am planning to deal with all of these points in a very
deep and penetrating way.
For
this first Newsletter I would like to reprise what I first wrote back in
August of 2008. It is an article taken from the Harvard Health Letter
published by the Harvard Medical School. I invite all comments, suggestions
and questions.
This
article is taken from the April 2008 issue of the Harvard Health Letter, and it warms my heart to report this!
The title of the article is: “The Seven Common Ailments which can be
managed without medication.” It names the following ailments in this
category:
Arthritis,
Cholesterol, Cognitive Decline, Depression, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure,
and Osteoporosis. Let’s look at what Harvard had to say about each of
these:
1.
Arthritis: Osteoarthritis is
the deterioration of cartilage which cushions the joints and is the most common
form of arthritis among the elderly. The first and most important thing to
do is optimize your diet by eating right. Make sure you are getting optimal
amounts of vitamin D (sunlight is still the best way, but impossible in the
northern part of the USA including Maryland for 7 months of the year). Get
adequate omega-3 fatty acids (Fish oil, Krill oil, and flax oil).
Incorporate regular low-impact exercise (walking and light weights) into
your routine. Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disease in which your
body starts to destroy itself. The joints may even become deformed. Eat
right, following an anti-inflammatory diet, and take the supplements
recommended by a qualified Nutritionist. Also, with RA, see if emotional
causes are involved and get help for that from a qualified Counselor.
2.
Cholesterol: There is no such
thing as “good” or “bad” cholesterol. Cholesterol is present because the
body makes it in order to sustain hormone levels and to combat
inflammation. An "excess" is due to inflammation in the body. In
other words, blocking it will lead to all kinds of serious disease and even
death. Blocking the formation of cholesterol will throw off hormones in
both males and females. The best way to combat inflammation is with diet
and dietary supplements. Eliminating sugar and most grains will reduce your
insulin levels and naturally and healthfully reduce your cholesterol. Get
regular low-impact exercise and take your omega-3 supplements and other
supplements which target your problems and make your body function well.
(By the way, the latest reports of statin drugs like Lipitor reducing the
chances of age related cognitive decline such as dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease is patently ridiculous and should be
taken off the airways before people who believe this are dying! In
actuality, as Dr. Sherry Rogers has reported, “Lipitor guarantees
deterioration of mind, heart and body while triggering cancer as it poisons
cholesterol chemistry.”)
3.
Cognitive decline: There is an
epidemic of Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia. To
prevent these two age-related diseases, eat right, take quality supplements
individualized for you, get tested for diagnosis of toxicity and then
complete a detoxification with a qualified Nutritionist. Avoid sugar, eat
more vegetables, and get antioxidants into your body through the vegetables
and high quality supplements. Get all your mercury fillings (amalgams or
“silver fillings”) removed by a Biological Dentist. Check the IAOMT at
www.iaomt.org for a list of dentists in proper Holistic or Biological
dentistry. Avoid all aluminum cookware and cans, antiperspirants, and do
not get flu vaccinations containing Thimerasol or
aluminum (they all do at this time). Develop an exercise plan which
includes cardio and weights. An exercise regimen just 3 times a week can
push back cognitive decline by 10-15 years.
In other words, to help keep your brain
sharp, do the following: Optimize your levels of Vitamin D with sunlight in
the summer and supplements the rest of the year; Take daily Omega 3 fatty
acids in the form of fish oil or Krill; Challenge your mind daily by
travelling, learning to play an instrument, or doing puzzles; Avoid mercury
and get mercury fillings removed from your body; avoid aluminum in
cookware, antiperspirants, and vaccinations; Avoid fluoride. And avoid
sugar (diabetics have a 65% greater chance of developing Alzheimer's
Disease), processed grains, aspartame, and soy.
4.
Depression: Antidepressant
drugs of any kind do nothing at all to treat the cause of depression!
Combine good high quality supplements with a proper diet, and do light
exercise (see Dr. Baldwin for instructions on exercise), and get tested for
and treated for toxicity by a qualified Nutritionist. Get proper counseling
from a qualified person.
5.
Diabetes: Type II Diabetes is
completely preventable and almost always reversible with proper dietary
and lifestyle modifications! Include elimination of sugar, regular
exercise, eating only the proper fats, getting proper omega-3 fats, getting
enough sleep, and lowering your weight. (Again, Metformin and all other
drugs for diabetes are not only unnecessary, but they cause so many
problems that they are a net health negative.)
6.
High Blood
Pressure:
HBP is a serious risk factor for heart disease. Possibly 90% of Americans
may eventually be affected by HBP. Limiting processed grains and sugars
along with regular light exercise will normalize blood pressure by lowering
insulin levels. (Beginning to sound like a broken record, huh?)
7.
Osteoporosis: Again, exercise
and diet are important. Vitamins D and K are also important. Increase
vegetable consumption. If you cannot eat all the vegetables you need, buy a
good juicer and juice every vegetable that you can. If this is
inconvenient, try the Nano-Greens that we sell in the office. Do not
count on milk for the strength of your bones!! The only animal that
drinks another animal’s milk is the human being! And the only animal that
drinks any milk at all after weaning is the human being! Should we learn
something from this? I think so. Cows don’t drink milk after weaning, and
they have strong bones. They eat grass—we should eat vegetables of all
colors, especially green.
I
genuinely would like your thoughts on these subjects and on anything I
write about. Thanks ahead of time for your input, and please share this
Newsletter with your friends, family and neighbors.
All of Dr. Baldwin’s recommendations are based on
solid scientific research. However,
no one Nutritional Plan will work for ever
person, nor will any one Nutritional Plan work for every disease or
degenerative condition. Pathways is not a substitute for proper medical
diagnosis of conditions which may require medical or surgical
intervention. Our Diagnostic System
allows us to treat the person with the condition and not the condition that
has the person. Our program is not
simply a weight loss program. It is
a program intended to help the client learn how he or she can attain optimal
health and wellness with a healthy immune system. We maintain that everyone should be able
to live life to the fullest and enjoy each day of life. To get in touch
