Hints for the New Year

The magic of Christmas is always a wonderful time of year and good preparation for what lies ahead in the New Year. It is also a time to rededicate ourselves to what is important in our lives and to our health. This is the theme of this issue of “Pathways.”

There are many things you can do to accelerate your Pathway to Optimal Health this year. I hear so many people complaining about Washington, DC, professional sports, the weather, the economy, and so many other things that they can do absolutely nothing about. However, wha t you do with your life and what you put into your mouth are both things that not only affect you tremendously, but which are also under your total and absolute control. Here are some things to consider:

1.     Take your recommended supplements daily. While theoretically we should all be able to get all we need from our food, this is actually not possible today. The soils have been ruined and are without nutrients in most parts of the world. If the nutrients are not in the soil, they are not in the plants. If they are not in the plants, they are not in the animals that eat the plants, and they are not in the animals that eat the other animals! Many people tell me, “I can’t afford to take all the supplements that my body needs.” No, the answer is, “I can’t afford not to take all the supplements my body needs.” And consider this: the supplements I recommend that they average healthy person take cost $5.76 per day. And this includes one meal replacement, so you don’t even have to pay for that one meal! What does a “Pick Two” cost at Panera’s? The answer is about $6.95! And that’s a deal! Replace that “Pick Two” with the meal replacement Nutritional Drink and you are already ahead by $1.19!!!

2.     Stop using plastic and styrofoam. Use glass, paper, and ceramic for drinks. Never, ever, ever heat anything in plastic or styrofoam. This releases toxins that your body cannot handle. It leads to serious illness after it accumulates in your body for a period of time. (This includes baby bottles which should always be made of glass.)

3.     Use only Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Coconut oil, nut oils, and others as found on my information sheet “The healthy use of fats.” The people at Harvard Medical School have stated that if we Americans would all throw out all vegetable oils, hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils, soy and soybean oils, shortening, margarine and spreads we would decrease the incidence of heart disease by 55 percent!! Can you imagine how much money could be made if a drug company could come up with a pill that would reduce heart disease by 55 percent? And actually it’s very simple.

4.     Never eat or drink anything with high fructose corn syrup as an ingredient. This is the only substance (it cannot be called a food) which directly becomes fat in the body!

5.     Get rid of your microwave.

6.     Eat the anti-flu diet recommended by Mark Davis, PhD of the U. of South Carolina: plenty of onions, garlic, broccoli, spinach, lettuce, cauliflower, and berries. Use lots of fresh spices and herbs (less than two years old) and preferably from your own garden so you know they are organic and fresh.

7.     Start eating organically. Not pesticides, insecticides, hormones or antibiotics in or on your food. It not only is non-toxic to your body, but these foods are much more nutritious.

8.     Throw out all sodas, drink nothing out of aluminum cans, and never ever touch diet foods of any kind.

9.     Get a pedometer and make sure you walk 8,000 steps per day at least 5 days a week. This is comparable to about 5 miles and along with the use of some light weights is really all the exercise you need.

10.    Drink green and/or black tea every day. Besides the antioxidants in green tea, drinking as little as ¾ cup of black tea per day reduces the risk of developing Parkinson’s Disease by 71 percent!

11.   Make an appointment to see a qualified acupuncturist for some of your ills. Just one session of acupuncture can reduce blood pressure by 40 percent. The same goes for seeing a good Reflexologist, and we know a good one in Leonardtown!

12.   Eat warm foods. According to Chinese medicine, too many cold foods can chill your body, which slows down your circulation, weakens your digestive fire and creates stagnation in your organs. Cold foods and drinks throw water on the fire of digestion.

13.   Again from Chinese medicine: do everything by the principle of moderation as demonstrated by the 70 percent rule: don’t do anything beyond 70 percent of your capacity. This includes even eating until you are 70 percent full! It applies to exercise also.

14.   Lower Cholesterol naturally: use Niacin (200 mg per day), vitamin C (1,000mg per day), fish oils (as recommended by your Nutritionist), and red yeast rice extract (1,200 mg per day).

15.   And last, but definitely not least, eat only for your Nutritional Type. If you don’t know your Nutritional Type, call us and set up an appointment to find out what it is and not only how you should eat, but also which supplements will work best for you. Nutritional Typing (also called Metabolic Typing) is a proven scientific method of determining the foods and supplements that you metabolize best.  Even what you might consider a “healthy” food may not be right for your unique Nutritional Type. This is also the key to obtaining and maintaining your optimal weight. While you might read of several methods of determining your Nutritional Type, there is only one way that is proven to work and that is by evaluating and monitoring the person’s metabolizing of a drink given to them by a trained professional.

And let me give you an extra special eleventh hint: Find out who your God is and pray to that God! With all that lines up against us in this world we need more than ever to be close to our family, to friends, and to worship and call on a God who will help us through all our trials and who will support and guide our efforts.

A Happy and Healthy New Year to all of you and I will see you next month.

Please tell your family, friends, co-workers, and everyone you know to please sign up for the Newsletter Pathways to Optimal Health at www.wholebodyhealth.us and tell them it’s free!

All of Dr. Baldwin’s recommendations are based on solid scientific research.  However, no one Nutritional Plan will work for ever person, nor will any one Nutritional Plan work for every disease or degenerative condition.  Pathways is not a substitute for proper medical diagnosis of conditions which may require medical or surgical intervention.  Our Diagnostic System allows us to treat the person with the condition and not the condition that has the person.  Our program is not simply a weight loss program.  It is a program intended to help the client learn how he or she can attain optimal health and wellness with a healthy immune system.  We maintain that everyone should be able to live life to the fullest and enjoy each day of life. Healthy Recipe for January, 2009

Kiwis contain heart-healthy nutrients like potassium, magnesium, and vitamins C and E. Eating kiwis may prevent heart disease and stroke, lower triglycerides, and prevent macular degeneration.

Thanks to Natural Solutions Magazine for the following recipes:

Kiwi fruit smoothie:

In a blender, mix ½ cup pineapple juice, 1 tablespoon agave, 1 sliced banana, two peeled kiwis, a good fiber, and the proper amount of Paleo Meal or Metabol-X. Blend until smooth.

Kiwi-marinated pork chops:

In a baking dish, cover 4-6 thin pork chops with 3 peeled, mashed kiwis; marinate for 30 minutes. Saute ½ cup chopped Vidalia onion in 2 teaspoons olive oil. Stir in 1 cup applesauce and ½ teaspoon cinnamon. Spoon sauce over kiwi-topped chops, and bake at 375 degrees, covered for 20 minutes, then uncovered for 20 more.

Supplement for the Month of January, 2009

HLC Probiotics

This probiotic is most important for the health of your gut. It is of the highest quality and was developed by Nigel Plumm er, PhD.

Probiotics are just about the most important supplements available. They help the brain work better, they account for about 80 percent or more of the immune system, they help other supplements get absorbed, and so many other functions, that I cannot name them all!

We all need to supplement with probiotics due to the fact that antibiotics kill off the good bacteria in the gut, preservatives in food kill off these bacteria, and pesticides and insecticides kill off these bacteria. When they are dead, our immune system and our absorptive capacity are effectively dead, and so is our cognitive capacity through brain function. And at this point, yeast and fungi can take over.

If you take no other supplement, take a good, high quality probiotic, and I think that HLC probiotic is the one to take!
