What
a beautiful Spring! Except for the allergies, it has been spectacular. So, allergies
are the subject of our Newsletter this month.
But first, please
note to the left (in our “Events” Section) that the date of our OPEN
HOUSE will be Wednesday, May 28. It will be held at our Office
at the Avondale Center, Suite 201, 14350 Solomons Island Road in Solomons,
MD from 5:30 pm until 8:00 pm and Dr. Baldwin will be speaking on the topic
of “Cholesterol and medications: Facts and Fictions” from 6:30 until 7:30.
You don’t want to miss this fun evening—and it’s open to the public.
So
many people are taking medications for allergies. It has, like so many
pharmaceutical answers to our medical problems, become a booming business. The
treatment of allergies is now a multi-billion dollar business! And,
like so many of the pharmaceutical industry’s answers, the drugs have
nothing to do with the innate cause of the allergies—an out of control
histaminic reaction due to a compromised immune system. Drugs only block
the body’s natural defense mechanisms, and over the long haul, this doesn’t
work.
An
allergy is not due to a lack of medication in the body.
Specifically, for those of you who are of scientific bent, allergies are
due to a Th2 immune system imbalance. It is speculated that there may be an
overgrowth of yeast and fungi in the intestinal tract, that leads to the
presence of yeast and fungi in the bronchial secretions. I personally think
this is only a small part of the explanation as to why allergies and asthma
have increased ten-fold over the past 50 years. The fact is that a
body that is well fed and well cared for will not have to constantly take
drugs to overcome the histaminic reaction to every little allergen.
All
of you who battle allergies throughout the year or at certain times of the
year should know that not all of your allergies are due to the same causes,
and the answers to your problems may not be the same. As with all health
issues, the concept of Biochemical
Individuality is of utmost importance.
There
are basically four steps to minimizing allergic reactions such as allergic
rhinitis:
1.
Lessen inflammation: All allergies have this in
common: the antigen (allergen) stimulates two related cell types—mast cells
and basophils. Mast cells line the blood vessels in the connective tissue
of the lungs, inner eyelids, gut, ear, throat and skin. Basophils are a type of white blood cell.
Both mast cells and basophils are full of granules of histamine and other
allergic chemical mediators. When allergen/antigens in the blood contact
mast cells or basophils in sufficient numbers, a burst of histamine and other
allergic mediators is released into the bloodstream. It is the histamine
and other allergic mediators that trigger the misery of allergic reaction.
This is the process of inflammation. You have heard me talk about
the two major “diseases” or ailments of the 21st Century—inflammation and toxicity. The object is to keep
inflammation under control to avoid the “itis” factor. Inflammation
furthers the irritation of the tissues and in the case of the airway from
the lungs it also further narrows it, making it hard to breathe and
increasing congestion. Vitamin C
(at least 2 grams per day) is a big weapon in our fight, but also
taking a supplement like Inflammatone
is invaluable. There is nothing as effective against inflammation as Omega
3 oils (so-called “Fish Oils.”) And
we can work together to find out why you are so inflamed. It could be any
one of a large number of causes. This will allow us to tailor your
treatment to you as an individual.
If you are battling allergies, either
once in a while or all the time, stop eating dairy in all forms! In fact,
try an elimination diet.
We can help you with this—an elimination diet is not the easiest thing to
do, but it only takes a couple of weeks, and the payoff is tremendous!
2.
Enhance Mucous Membrane Resistance: a good way to
protect your mucous membranes from irritation is by maintaining proper
hydration. Moist membranes are more resilient and less likely to become
irritated. In other words, drink lots of water (or the healthy drink of
your choice), especially during allergy season. Ensure that your immune
system is at its healthiest. You can do this by taking Probiotics to keep your gut healthy. For me, this involves
increasing my intake of Vitamin C.
3.
Minimize exposures: total body burden is the real
factor.
a.
Limit outdoor activity during early morning and
mid-evening.
b.
Keep car windows closed and keep the air on
re-circulate.
c.
Shower before bed to get the pollen off your hair.
d.
Keep clothing which has become covered with pollen
from working outside from coming into your house and contaminating your
home.
4.
And don’t forget to always eat for your Metabolic Type. This
is our main line of defense and offense in our constant battle for
good health, weather it’s allergies we are fighting or viruses or any of
the other agents which are always trying to wear us down.
See
you in June!
Please
tell your family, friends, co-workers, and everyone you know to please sign
up for the Newsletter Pathways to Optimal Health at www.wholebodyhealth.us and tell
them it’s free!
As
always, your questions, comments, and suggestions are welcomed!
All of Dr. Baldwin’s recommendations are based on
solid scientific research. However,
no one Nutritional Plan will work for ever person, nor will any one Nutritional
Plan work for every disease or degenerative condition. Pathways is not a substitute for
proper medical diagnosis of conditions which may require medical or
surgical intervention. Our
Diagnostic System allows us to treat the person with the condition and not
the condition that has the person.
Our program is not simply a weight loss program. It is a program intended to help
the client learn how he or she can attain optimal health and
wellness with a healthy immune system.
We maintain that everyone should be able to live life to the fullest
and enjoy each day of life. To get in touch with us, dial 410-326-6690 and
