Thoughts for May

What a beautiful Spring! Except for the allergies, it has been spectacular. So, allergies are the subject of our Newsletter this month.

But first, please note to the left (in our “Events” Section) that the date of our OPEN HOUSE will be Wednesday, May 28. It will be held at our Office at the Avondale Center, Suite 201, 14350 Solomons Island Road in Solomons, MD from 5:30 pm until 8:00 pm and Dr. Baldwin will be speaking on the topic of “Cholesterol and medications: Facts and Fictions” from 6:30 until 7:30. You don’t want to miss this fun evening—and it’s open to the public.

So many people are taking medications for allergies. It has, like so many pharmaceutical answers to our medical problems, become a booming business. The treatment of allergies is now a multi-billion dollar springtime allergies.jpgbusiness! And, like so many of the pharmaceutical industry’s answers, the drugs have nothing to do with the innate cause of the allergies—an out of control histaminic reaction due to a compromised immune system. Drugs only block the body’s natural defense mechanisms, and over the long haul, this doesn’t work.

An allergy is not due to a lack of medication in the body. Specifically, for those of you who are of scientific bent, allergies are due to a Th2 immune system imbalance. It is speculated that there may be an overgrowth of yeast and fungi in the intestinal tract, that leads to the presence of yeast and fungi in the bronchial secretions. I personally think this is only a small part of the explanation as to why allergies and asthma have increased ten-fold over the past 50 years. The fact is that a body that is well fed and well cared for will not have to constantly take drugs to overcome the histaminic reaction to every little allergen.

All of you who battle allergies throughout the year or at certain times of the year should know that not all of your allergies are due to the same causes, and the answers to your problems may not be the same. As with all health issues, the concept of Biochemical Individuality is of utmost importance.

There are basically four steps to minimizing allergic reactions such as allergic rhinitis:

1.     Lessen inflammation: All allergies have this in common: the antigen (allergen) stimulates two related cell types—mast cells and basophils. Mast cells line the blood vessels in the connective tissue of the lungs, inner eyelids, gut, ear, throat and skin.  Basophils are a type of white blood cell. Both mast cells and basophils are full of granules of histamine and other allergic chemical mediators. When allergen/antigens in the blood contact mast cells or basophils in sufficient numbers, a burst of histamine and other allergic mediators is released into the bloodstream. It is the histamine and other allergic mediators that trigger the misery of allergic reaction. This is the process of inflammation. You have heard me talk about the two major “diseases” or ailments of the 21st Century—inflammation and toxicity. The object is to keep inflammation under control to avoid the “itis” factor. Inflammation furthers the irritation of the tissues and in the case of the airway from the lungs it also further narrows it, making it hard to breathe and increasing congestion. Vitamin C (at least 2 grams per day) is a big weapon in our fight, but also taking a supplement like Inflammatone is invaluable. There is nothing as effective against inflammation as Omega 3 oils (so-called “Fish Oils.”) And we can work together to find out why you are so inflamed. It could be any one of a large number of causes. This will allow us to tailor your treatment to you as an individual.

If you are battling allergies, either once in a while or all the time, stop eating dairy in all forms! In fact, try an elimination diet. We can help you with this—an elimination diet is not the easiest thing to do, but it only takes a couple of weeks, and the payoff is tremendous!

2.     Enhance Mucous Membrane Resistance: a good way to protect your mucous membranes from irritation is by maintaining proper hydration. Moist membranes are more resilient and less likely to become irritated. In other words, drink lots of water (or the healthy drink of your choice), especially during allergy season. Ensure that your immune system is at its healthiest. You can do this by taking Probiotics to keep your gut healthy. For me, this involves increasing my intake of Vitamin C.

3.     Minimize exposures: total body burden is the real factor.

a.     Limit outdoor activity during early morning and mid-evening.

b.     Keep car windows closed and keep the air on re-circulate.

c.     Shower before bed to get the pollen off your hair.

d.     Keep clothing which has become covered with pollen from working outside from coming into your house and contaminating your home.

4.     And don’t forget to always eat for your Metabolic Type. This is our main line of defense and offense in our constant battle for good health, weather it’s allergies we are fighting or viruses or any of the other agents which are always trying to wear us down.

See you in June!

Healthy Recipe for May

Roasted Asparagus with Pecorino Romano and Hazelnuts

One of our very favorite veggies is asparagus, and this is the time of year to get it fresh and organic.

HealingFoods.gif¼ cup hazelnuts

1 bunch asparagus (about 1 pound)

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Kosher salt

Freshly ground pepper

½ cup freshly grated pecorino Romano cheese

1.     In a small, dry skillet over medium heat, toast the hazelnuts, stirring constantly, until they just begin to turn light brown, about 5 minutes. Immediately enclose the nuts in a clean kitchen towel and rub vigorously to remove the dark brown skins. Don’t worry if tiny pieces of skin remain on the nuts. Pour the nuts into a colander and shake to separate the nuts from the skins. Coarsely chop the nuts and set aside.

2.     Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Snap or cut off the tough ends of each asparagus spear. Put the spears in a baking dish, drizzle with olive oil, and turn to coat. Season to taste with salt and pepper and spread the spears in an even layer. Roast the spears, turning once or twice, until crisp-tender, 15 to 20 minutes. Transfer to a warmed platter and sprinkle with the cheese. Scatter the hazelnuts over the top and serve!

A Personal Note

MCj04338680000[1]Over the past twenty years, I have become one of the strongest proponents of the cause and effect relationship between infectious pathogens and autoimmune disease as well as other systemic medical problems.  This strong belief has been based on my review of hundreds of published articles in the scientific literature and my own clinical observations.  However, its roots can be traced to the terrible suffering of my mother from arthritis during my early and formative years and continuing until her death in January of 2002.  She was actually crippled by a makeshift dentist (dental technician) when she was first affected by arthritis at the age of 17.  She was told that she had “gum disease” and she would be better off getting all her teeth out instead of getting treatment.  When the teeth were extracted, the infection most likely remained in the bone, and the arthritis continued to worsen.

During the following years, my mother’s arthritis got so bad that she had both hips replaced, both knees replaced, and both hands operated on to replace and clean out the knuckles.  She never had a moment without pain.  In all this time no “doctor” mentioned infection as a cause.  No “doctor” suggested that she be evaluated nutritionally.  They only did the mechanical work of surgery.

Later, when I became familiar with the work of Dr. Paul Ewald of Amherst University, Dr. Walter Loesche of the University of Michigan, and Dr. Paul Keyes of the National Institute of Dental Research, among many others, I started to question the doctors treating my mother and ask if she might have an infection in her body.  All of them denied that infection had anything to do with autoimmune disease.

I became acutely aware of this during my own 38 years as a Dentist. In fact, this is what drove me to write the Protocols for Biocompatible (non-surgical) Treatment of Periodontal (gum) Infection for the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. I also founded and served as Publisher of the Newsletter of Non-Surgical Periodontics. The principles I espoused then have since become common knowledge in much of the “Holistic or Non-Toxic” Dental Community.

Dr. Aristo Vojdani of Immunosciences Laboratory has published research showing the connection between autoimmune disease and infection and specifically showed that his own mother, who suffered terribly from the same type of arthritis as my mother, had antibody titers to bacteria in the mouth so high that there was no question that her arthritis was directly related to oral infection.

I am absolutely convinced by this outstanding science that my mother’s arthritis could have been greatly relieved by treating the infection and by strengthening her body and immune system with good Nutrition. There is no longer any doubt, and there is no excuse for present day medicine and dentistry not realizing the connection.  Enough people have suffered!!
