Detoxification

One of the “scourges” of the 21st Century promises to be the loss of brain function that we are seeing at an alarming if not epidemic rate in our population. “Thinking, just like breathing or perspiring, is a bodily function. All thoughts and feelings, no matter how lofty or deranged, stem from chemical and electrical signals in your brain, and how well you behave and think depends to a great degree on how well your brain works.” (This latter quote comes from a new book Dyslogic Syndrome by Dr. Bernard Rimland, one of the world’s foremost research psychologists. I recommend buying the book if you are at all concerned with brain dysfunction at any age. While Dr. Rimland has spent his career in working with children, the principles he espouses apply to any age.)

Having had to watch my mother die with Alzheimer’s disease was terribly painful to me, and now I know that this scourge, along with dementia and other neurological diseases are not only treatable but also preventable. The label put on neurological disorders is not important. Whether something is called dementia or Alzheimer’s is irrelevant. What is important is what is the biochemical cause of the problem. Invariably, the cause is chalked up to being “not known.” But, if you don’t look for something, you won’t find it! I learned that from my Grandmother!

Just testing for fatty acid level would be a terrific start, but since almost everyone in the United States is deficient in these essential nutrients, you don’t even have to pay for a test. In my opinion (and that of many other experts), unless proven otherwise, everyone should be given essential fatt y acids—the so called “Fish Oils.” (This is a misnomer—while found in fish, they are actually Omega 3, 6, and 9 oils, and they are found in a wide variety of foods if the foods are organic, free-range, and/or grass fed.) Two of the most important Omega 3 oils are DHA and EPA.

DHA, the so-called “brain oil” is poisoned by phthalates from plastics, and as we have detailed in previous Newsletters (see our Web Site for the archives) every living thing on the planet is toxic with phthalates, and we should all take part in a professionally guided detoxification at least twice a year. We also can maintain this detoxification between the professionally guided sessions with proper nutrition! Detoxification will allow the DHA to feed the brain.

In order to repair a damaged brain we must correct the deficiencies of brain nutrients, unload the toxins, stop putting dangerous toxins into our bodies, and feed the brain the nutrients it needs. If we do these four things, we will not have to suffer brain function loss as children, nor as we age.

So, how do we feed the brain the nutrients it needs and correct the deficiencies? Well we start by getting off sugars (especially high fructose corn syrup) and throwing out poor quality oils (I have a page that I wrote on good versus bad oils that is available if you e-mail me and request it). We clean up our living environment by getting rid of all toxins. Two other  books I can recommend are  Green This! And Growing Up Green, by Deirdre Imus. Buying these books will not only improve your own life and that of your family, but it also will help the Imus Cattle Ranch for Kids. We also increase our intake of antioxidants via multi-colored and lightly prepared vegetables and high quality supplements.

We get rid of toxic “air purifiers” and substitute non-toxic fragrances like rosemary (improves memory), orange (boosts happiness and reduces anxiety), jasmine (calms nerves), sage (eases physical pain), and lavender (calming and relaxing) oils.

Stop all the sodas, especially the highly toxic diet sodas—even worse in aluminum cans. Quit smoking! Exercise in moderation.

You can improve your sleep quality in many ways, and this helps the brain in recovery and growth.

Next, get the toxins that have built up in your body out of your body. This is harder to do with brain toxins, but a knowledgeable Nutritionist can help you to do it! Toxins build up in fatty tissue. And fatty tissue is found in the fat around the body, the linings of the arteries, the linings of the nerves, the oily fluid in the joints, and in the brain which is 85% fat. We offer three levels of detoxification. The basic level is a good start. For those with signs and symptoms of toxicity, including decrease in brain function, there is a moderate detoxification. For the more advanced problems there is the most comprehensive detoxification which includes the use of a Far InfraRed Sauna (FIRS).

The brain weighs a mere 3 pounds and yet demands at least one-fifth of our oxygen and blood sugar, even when at rest. To support this intense activity requires the full spectrum of nutrients. Three nutrients stand out from the rest for their proven clinical benefits, their safety of use, and their contributions to brain vitality and renewal. The three are Phosphatidyl Serene (PS), GlyceroPhosphoCholine (GPC), and AcetylCarnitine (AC). Through our office we are offering two brain supplements which contain these three nutrients—please see the “Supplements of the Month” in this Newsletter.

Make no mistake. As I said earlier, degeneration of brain and neurological function is totally preventable. Even after an accident or stroke, your brain can be helped to recover a great deal of its function!! (“Google” Dr. Paris Kidd and you will see what I mean and that this is supported by a huge amount of research.)

Be back next month!!

Healthy Recipe for October, 2008

Dish of Brains

(Thanks to the October issue of Ladies Home Journal for the following “Ghostly Recipe.” What does cauliflower look like—use your imagination—and enjoy!)

Butter, for baking dish

1 cup Israeli (large grain) couscous

1 head cauliflower, leaves and core discarded

2 cups (8 oz) grated Gruyere or sharp white cheddar

¾ cup heavy cream

½ cup chicken broth

2 tsp chopped fresh thyme leaves

1 tsp sea or kosher salt

½ tsp freshly ground pepper

Heat oven to 375 degrees and butter a 1 ½ to 2 quart baking dish and set aside. In a skillet, toast couscous over medium-high heat, stirring often, until golden brown, about 4 minutes. Transfer to prepared dish, spreading evenly.

Cut cauliflower into small florets. Place in skillet with olive oil and cook until lightly browned. Add 1 ½ cups cheese, the cream, broth, thyme, salt and pepper; toss until combined well. Spread our over couscous in baking dish and top with remaining ½ cup cheese.

Bake until golden brown and bubbly and cauliflower is slightly caramelized, 40-45 minutes.

Makes 8-10 servings.

Supplement of the Month

Brain Vibrance Supreme and Brain Vitale

These two supplements (BVS is a powder, and BV is a capsule) have all 3 of the most important nutrients that support brain function. They help in:

1)     Attention and total mental focus in healthy people of all ages

2)     Management of mood, anxiety, and stress response

3)     Memory, learning, comprehension and overall cognition

4)     Mental sharpness and focus at all ages

5)     Mental endurance

6)     Revitalization of declining mental performance

7)     Brain repair

8)     Sociability and activities of daily living in the elderly (grooming, toilet and other functions)

9)     Increasing energy in daily living

Both of these supplements contain phosphtidyl serene, glycerophosphocholine, and acetylcarnitine, the “Big Three” nutrients for brain vitality and repair. These nutrients occur naturally in all our cells and are deeply rooted in our life processes. Therefore, they not only have exceptional efficacy, they also have exceptional safety.

These nutrients have been supported in over 60 papers published in the peer-reviewed scientific literature.
